We are a multicultural church, and our worship reflects it
First, a friendly warning: Our worship services don't last the usual one hour. An hour and a half is more like it, with fellowship and a meal afterward. Why? Because we enjoy worship. Our worship is joyful. And we are sustained by the community we find at St. Andrew.
We combine the Reformed and African American traditions. What does that mean? Both Presbyterian and African American Heritage hymnals. Presbyterian liturgy with an altar call. Good preaching. Prayers of the people. Lively music (and clapping and, when it's really lively, you might see some dancing). Reformed but informal. Serious about worship. Having fun worshipping God. Music has an important role to play in our worship.
Our worship committee develops creative services for the traditional Christian celebrations (Our children start the advent services. Ash Wednesday features soul searching testimonies as well as the tearing of cloth and the imposition of ashes).
We also devote a month of special services (and classes and meals) to both Black History month and Women's history month, always with participation by members and friends. Music, stories, dances, testimony—we draw on the spiritual, intellectual, and emotional fountains of the community.
